Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.
1. Sam Harris on what success won’t get you
“If you are perpetually angry, depressed, confused and unloving, it doesn’t matter how much success you have, or who is in your life. You’re not going to enjoy any of it.” – Sam Harris
If you’re not content, the source of discontent is almost always internal.
2. Village of Frugality
Three different users sent me this wonderful picture this week. I really want to visit this sign.
Thanks to Matthew Hunt for the great picture!
3. Anaïs Nin on courage
“Life shrinks and expands in proportion to one’s courage.” – Anaïs Nin
The more courage you have, the more opportunities you have.
4. Alex Laskey on how behavioral science can lower your energy bill
Tremendous ideas here. I think energy bills just scratch the surface of where people can save money thanks to applications of behavioral science.
5. Augustine Mandino on helping others
“Beginning today, treat everyone you meet as if he/she were going to be dead by midnight. Extend to them all of the care, kindness and understanding you can muster. And do so with no thought of any reward. Your life will never be the same again.” – Augustine Mandino
Think about this with everyone you interact with today. How would you treat them if you knew they would die at midnight? Why are you not treating them like that now (or at least something like that)?
6. Isaac Asimov on science and society
“The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.” – Isaac Asimov
I think this conflict causes a lot of society’s problems, actually.
7. Ten Minutes
This is an amazing short film. There are a few language issues – some cursing in Spanish when a character gets upset – but it comes together so well. It’s subtitled.
8. Moshe Ibn Ezra on love and hate
“Love blinds us to faults, but hatred blinds us to virtues.” – Moshe Ibn Ezra
What virtues are you missing out on in the things you profess to hate?
9. Abandoned sandals
I love to find the sandals of someone who has left them behind for a while to walk barefoot and free. They’re stepping out and experiencing the feel of the world on their feet. Beautiful.
Thanks to Klearchos Kapoutsis for the image!
10. Ethan Hawke on writing
“Write every day. Not every other day. Not tomorrow. Not after the party. But before. The more you write, the more comes out of you. If you don’t give inspiration an opportunity, it will never arrive.” – Ethan Hawke
If you want a life centered around creative work, do that creative work every day just for the joy of it.
