Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.
1. Marie Curie on perseverance
“Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.” – Marie Curie
All of us have something that we’re good at. The best we can do in life is sharpen that skill and find the best way to use it.
2. Kelly McGonigal on making stress your friend
Stress can help you in positive ways, too. It comes down to how you handle it.
3. Napoleon on decisions
“Nothing is more difficult, and therefore more precious, than to be able to decide.” – Napoleon Bonaparte
A successful person makes good decisions quickly. That’s the art of success.
4. Adam Spencer on why he loves large numbers
This is more of a talk about a lifelong passion than anything else.
5. Emerson on being yourself
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
It is very difficult to just be yourself because we have so many defenses against being open and honest.
6. Dante on the challenge of midlife
“In the middle of the journey of our life I came to myself within a dark wood where the straight way was lost.” – Dante
I think all of us feels this way at some point in our adult life.
7. Laura Nyro – It’s Gonna Take a Miracle
I just love her voice.
8. Haruki Murakami on the value of new ideas
“If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.” – Haruki Murakami
I try to read a wide variety of things, some obscure, some not. It’s the mixture of ideas that produces interesting and new things.
9. Ray Charles – Where Can I Go?
I love how Ray uses his voice like an instrument, conveying so many different emotions so effectively.
10. Atticus Finch on parenting
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you begin, but you begin anyways and you see through it no matter what.” – Atticus Finch
Atticus Finch is, of course, the fictional creation of Harper Lee in her novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Although Atticus is fictional, he’s still my idea of what a true man and a great father is.
