Ten Pieces of Inspiration #152

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

1. H. Jackson Brown on time and dreams

“Never give up on a dream just because of the length of time it will take to accomplish it. The time will pass anyway.” — H. Jackson Brown

A big dream doesn’t happen overnight.

2. David Hoffman on losing everything

Physical things are sometimes lost, but the true core of who we are is inside of us.

3. Eleanor Roosevelt on happiness

“Happiness is not a goal. It is a by-product of a life well lived.” ― Eleanor Roosevelt

I certainly agree that happiness is often a side effect of achieving other things in life.

4. Fallen leaves

Fall leaves

The last of the fall leaves are departing from the trees. Another season ends, and another begins. Thanks to Sponselli for this great photo.

5. G.I. Gurdjieff on shared goals

“Common aim is stronger than blood.” – G.I. Gurdjieff

I’ve seen this at work. People who are all working together toward the same goal often form a very deep bond.

6. Ashley Ormon on the real goal of parenting

“I want to know we’re not pushing children toward the traditions of life, but instead cultivating them to grow in their own specific purposes, and make the dreams of their youth become realities as they age.” – Ashley Ormon

The last thing I want for my children is for them to duplicate my path.

7. The Mexican National Cathedral

Mexican National Cathedral - La Catedral Nacional de México

Old cathedrals touch me with a strange sense of reverence, not just for the beautiful architecture, but for the thousands of people who have been there over the hundred of years and stared at the cathedral in much the same way as I.

Thanks to Daniel Ronan for this image.

8. Dostoyevsky on life

“The mystery of human existence lies not in just staying alive, but in finding something to live for.” – Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Life feels awfully empty without something greater than ourselves to seek out and discover.

9. The Avett Brothers’ “Tiny Desk” Concert

I can’t even describe how much I adore this band. I’ve listened to The Avett Brothers perhaps more than any other musical act while writing The Simple Dollar. This is a good taste of their music.

10. Carlos Salinas de Gortari on isolation

“Isolation is a self-defeating dream.” – Carlos Salinas de Gortari

This quote makes me think of a family member of mine who has been struggling for a long time with issues of isolation, mostly self-imposed. It’s a prison that I would give almost anything to see that person break out of.
