Ten Pieces of Inspiration #164

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

1. Harold Whitman on being alive

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” ― Harold Whitman

Every time I’ve had a great life experience, it’s almost always involved someone who has “come alive” with passion for something they’re doing or involved with. It might be hard to make a living with passion, but it makes the world go around.

2. Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road

I’m trying to continue my trend of showcasing music that inspires me that isn’t classical, so I thought it made sense to feature this song. There are some songs by Bruce Springsteen that I find dull, but other ones just take my breath away. This is one of the latter.

3. Carlos Castenada on misery and strength

“We either make ourselves miserable, or we make ourselves strong. The amount of work is the same.” – Carlos Castaneda

A challenging experience is like an iron forge. You either melt or become strong.

4. Amadou & Mariam – Sénégal Fast Food

This song makes me want to see the world, to see all of the beautiful things it contains that I don’t get to see in my daily life. Amadou and Mariam have a very interesting story, well worth reading up on – they overcame blindness to become renowned musicians.

5. Muhammad Ali on effort

“I don’t count my sit-ups; I only start counting when it starts hurting because they’re the only ones that count.” – Muhammad Ali

If it comes easy, it’s not really helping you grow.

6. Trevor Noah on understanding others

“If you laugh with people you start to understand that you share more with them then you thought.” – Trevor Noah

Laughter draws people together and helps them to understand each other.

7. Matisyahu – King Without a Crown

This is simply a great, passionate reggae performance.

8. Edward Abbey on hopelessness

“When the situation is hopeless, there is nothing to worry about.” – Edward Abbey

Play cards with the hand you’re dealt. Don’t stress out about what may or may not be coming. Assume it will be challenging and simply prepare accordingly, without worry.

9. She & Him – Don’t Look Back

She and Him is a modern group that sounds as if it would fit in perfectly in 1964. It’s easy to imagine my parents listening to this on an old vinyl 45.

10. Dale Carnegie on the impressions of others

“There are four ways, and only four ways, in which we have contact with the world. We are evaluated and classified by these four contacts: what we do, how we look, what we say, and how we say it.” – Dale Carnegie

Keep this in mind when you interact with people and things will go better.
