Ten Pieces of Inspiration #171

Each week, I highlight ten things each week that inspired me to greater financial, personal, and professional success. Hopefully, they will inspire you as well.

1. Francis Bacon on hope

“Hope is a good breakfast, but it is a bad supper.” – Francis Bacon

Hope is a powerful starter, but it takes more than hope to finish the job.

2. Microsoft OneNote

This is the best piece of note-taking software I’ve ever used. It’s free for pretty much all platforms, too – Windows, Mac, iOS, and Android. The data syncs between all of them so you have your notes everywhere. It makes me want to start a new project.

The only thing keeping me from jumping from Evernote is the huge number of notes I have in Evernote.

3. Dalai Lama on kindness

“Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.” – Dalai Lama

Kindness pays infinite dividends. Look for the kind path in any situation you’re in.

4. Old Crow Medicine Show – Wagon Wheel (live)

Live shows have such incredible energy sometimes. This is a live rendition of one of my favorite songs.

5. Jonathan Sanders on other people

“There are over 7 billion people on this earth and you let one ruin your day. Don’t.” – Jonathan Sanders

If I ran a service business, I’d post this quote all over the place for every employee (and every customer) to see.

6. Eric Foner on ideas

“Ideas win wide acceptance based less on ‘truth and logic’ than on their suitability to the intellectual needs and preconceptions of social interests.” – Eric Foner

A friend sent me this when we were discussing the “10,000 hour” rule. He made a good point that this kind of “rule” was actually pretty useless, as some people require far less and some require far more to become exceptional, but it caught on because it was simple and because it establishes that becoming great is prohibitively hard for most people.

7. The Rainman Twins

This is the story of Flo and Kay, the world’s only autistic savant twins. Their story is incredible.

8. Joshua Marine on challenges

“Challenges are what make life interesting and overcoming them is what makes life meaningful.” – Joshua Marine

Few things are more fulfilling and meaningful than overcoming a great challenge.

9. Code Breakers: Bletchley Park’s Lost Heroes

Bill Tutte pulled off arguably the greatest intellectual feat of World War II, an amazing accomplishment that saved millions of lives. Yet, it’s likely you’ve never heard of him. This video explains his story.

10. Diogenes on our lives

“I am searching for the bones of your father but cannot distinguish them from those of a slave.” – Diogenes

We are not simply greater than other people just because of how we’re born, nor are we lesser than others. Our only difference is in the impact we leave on the world.
